One of the most popular questions on a National American Miss themed discussion group is a variation on “Is this OK for my daughter to wear?” Whether it’s for Interview/Personal Introduction or Formal Wear, the question is often followed with a photo for reference.
The first answer I always give is “Check your [NAM] magazines for reference” because they are super clear about what is permitted. Sometimes, however, there is still some confusion for first-timers because the magazines say “any length or style”. Some have contacted the national office and been told that what is stated in the magazines is acceptable. It is always best to defer to the national office on these things.
However, as I cautioned one mother, the national office is NOT going to tell you what dress to get or not get. They will refer you back to the printed materials. Which is absolutely as it should be! The judges are given the same materials and told to judge accordingly. Also, if the national office advises one girl, they have to advise ALL. Otherwise it would be seen as a conflict of interest or favoritism. And that is not in line with NAM core values.
That being said… NAM is a pageant. A scholarship pageant none-the-less is still a pageant. Attire is not scored on a separate line at NAM, however the overall presentation of the contestant is scored. As a friend of mine says, “We leave no points on the table”. To help you maximize your points, I’ve broken down the topic of “What To Wear” into sections: Check In, Interview/Personal Introduction and Formal Wear. Each will get it’s own post with pictures, examples, and references to the NAM Magazines so you can bookmark them and refer back when you need them.
