First Impressions

Check-In at National American Miss is a highly organized event. You will begin at one station and proceed down the line, turning in your paperwork as you go. Depending on your state, the dress code may be PJs for the PJ party or any other outfit you prefer.

Some people look at Check-In as a fashion show and opportunity to dress up, and if that’s your jam, that’s perfectly fine. What is required is that you look neat and presentable. Please don’t show up in curlers or jeans. You want your first impression to be a professional one!

This example shows a Princess contestant at check-in. She’s wearing a cute, age-appropriate dress and is neatly styled. She’s ready to meet the reigning royalty and turn in her paperwork before getting ready to compete.

Check-In is a great opportunity for your daughter to learn how to be independent! Have her hand in her paperwork at each station on her own. This is a safe space for her to learn how to communicate properly with “strangers”. Don’t speak for her. You can whisper in her ear what she needs to say, when she needs to say it if she needs help. Mom, you are there to carry her folder and tote bag and offer encouragement if she needs it!

PS: Moms please make sure you are neatly groomed as well! You don’t have to be fancy with a full face of makeup, but do make sure that you are neatly presented, especially with younger contestants! Moms will be accompanying their State Queens pretty much everywhere so you want to show that not only is your daughter ready to wear the crown, but you’re also committed to it as well!
